Sound United's Global "Sound Start" Foundation

Reports To: Board of Directors through its elected Board President

Position Description: The Executive Director who can work remotely, is responsible for the daily administration and management of the Sound Start Foundation (SSF) as well as global efforts in the UK and APAC, which includes but is not limited to business fundraising, annual fund development, marketing, supervision of paid staff and business operations in accordance with standard nonprofit business practices. The Executive Director works with and supports the Board of Directors to define its priorities, build and develop teamwork among board members and other volunteer leaders and ensures program and fiscal accountability.

Education: BA or BS required


  • Minimum of 8 years' experience in senior level management
  • Minimum of 5 years significant and measurable experience in nonprofit fundraising
  • Executive Director or Development Director experience preferred
  • Proficient in the use of QuickBooks, Excel, WordPress, and eTapestry donor software


Management and Administration

  • Implement Strategic Plan and ensure goals are met by assigned dates
  • Provide leadership in developing organizational plans with the Board and other staff
  • Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the SSF's work
  • Maintain official records and documents and ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, especially as they pertain to nonprofit organizations
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in philanthropy and education foundations in general
  • Oversee maintenance of financial, donor and alumni databases to ensure accuracy
  • Collaborate with South Start Foundation staff and school board leadership on fundraising priorities, budgeting and volunteer communication


  • Design and implement business fundraising programs with the board and staff
  • Direct all fundraising efforts including major gifts and other personal individual solicitations for the board-level SSF
  • Refine and implement the annual fund drive (AFD) with the board as it relates to school site fund development, goals, marketing and parent and community communications
  • Support fundraising activities by updating eTapestry donation pages and shopping carts
  • Enter AFD donations, matching donations and generate thank you letters in eTapestry as needed

Board Relations and Board Communications:

  • Assist the board in promoting and maintaining the vision and mission of SSF
  • Initiate and assist in recommending and developing policies and setting priorities
  • Keep the board fully informed on the condition of the SSF and other important factors affecting the health of the organization
  • Serve as staff liaison to board committees as appropriate

Public Relations and Communications:

  • Identify and develop new partnerships with business and community leaders
  • Ensure appropriate representation, as a spokesperson, of SSF's and SU's goals and objectives to the community and corporate groups and other stakeholders


  • Administer board approved personnel policies
  • Provide for adequate supervision and evaluation of all staff and consultants
  • Encourage staff and volunteer development and education
